Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

Your overall health is determined by countless factors, many of which lie right beneath the skin. Your veins operate within the circulatory system to transport blood back to the heart. When veins and valves do not function properly, the blood stops and builds up in the lower legs. This condition can cause varicose veins, known for their enlarged size and purple color.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are caused by a medical condition called venous insufficiency. This condition is an overarching term for when blood pools in the legs instead of traveling upward. Patients experience varicose veins after the blood collects for long enough to enlarge the area. Though varicose veins are not always an immediate health concern, many cases can lead to ulcers, blood clots or chronic venous issues.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins tend to appear near the surface of your skin around the knee, calf and ankle areas. Varicose veins are characterized by a dark blue or purple color and bulging appearance. Sometimes these veins can look twisted or rope-like due to their internal swelling.

Other varicose vein symptoms include the following:

  • Aching muscles
  • Burning or itching sensation
  • Leg cramps
  • Pain from sitting or standing
  • Skin color or texture changes

Causes of Varicose Veins

The primary cause of varicose veins is damaged vein or valve function. What creates this improper vein function differs between patients. Varicose veins can be a symptom of other venous diseases, such as chronic venous insufficiency. At the same time, varicose veins are an issue by themselves.

Below are the most common causes of varicose veins:

  • Pregnancy
  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Genetics
  • Menopause
  • Long periods of standing or sitting

Varicose Vein Treatment Options

At Texas Vein & Wellness Institute, we make it easy to get the care you need. Our varicose vein treatment options are long-lasting, minimally invasive procedures. Patients can choose from the following treatments:

  • Sclerotherapy: We typically recommend sclerotherapy for patients with mild cases of varicose veins. This procedure seals the irritated veins, redirecting the blood and fading any marks beneath the skin.
  • VenaSeal: Instead of using heat to seal the veins, VenaSeal injects a small amount of FDA-approved medical glue. This minimally invasive treatment collapses diseased veins, which signals the blood to reroute.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: Also known as RA, radiofrequency ablation uses a catheter to seal diseased veins. RA uses radiofrequency energy instead of laser energy to heat the vein until it closes.
  • Microphlebectomy: A microphlebectomy procedure improves your legs’ appearance and removes the damaged veins.

We may also recommend certain lifestyle changes to mitigate or prevent future issues. These adjustments include losing weight, exercising regularly or wearing compression stockings.

I went with my daughter who was having 3 veins repaired. The entire staff were very welcoming. I was allowed to stay with my daughter throughout the procedure. Each step was explained as the procedure took place. I was very impressed and felt comfortable with the whole process. What a caring group. I will not hesitate to go to them if I ever have issues with my veins. Thanks so much for taking care of my baby!

I showed up on the wrong date for my six-week follow up appointment and instead of having me return, they were so gracious and fitted me in. Tasha, the ultrasound technician was so kind to agree. My doctor is Dr. Johnson, who us wonderful but I also got to meet Dr. Rahao for the first time. He is one of the kindest doctors I have met. Hands down, I would recommend this facility over and over. The staff must be happy working there because it spills over to the patients.

Can not express how thankful I am for finding Dr. Rao. Wish I would have found him 3 years ago. Three years of being in pain why had the many of doctors I went to before him not tell me that it could be a vein problem? So so thankful that I was recommended to him by a friend. His office staff in the Brenham office are all so professional and friendly and seem to really care about me. Thank you, Dr. Rao!!!!
