Understanding Vein Health

Healthy veins are like a well-oiled machine, transporting blood to the heart with ease. As you age, veins can become overworked and lose their functionality. Because veins work against gravity to send blood upward, vein diseases often cause blood to pool in the legs.

For many people, vein complications can cause uncomfortable circulation issues. At Texas Vein & Wellness Institute, we help patients maintain, prevent and treat venous diseases.

What Is Vein Disease?

Venous diseases occur when the vein valves fail to transport blood to the heart. This process can happen gradually with age or result from other conditions. Common risk factors include the following:

  • Obesity
  • Extended sitting or standing
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal therapy
  • Smoking

We see vein diseases in many forms at our clinic in Houston. Common venous diseases include:

  • Deep vein thrombosis: Healthy blood clots help your body heal from an injury. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when harmful blood clots block the veins and cause pooling in the legs. This is a serious condition in which clots form in the deep vein of your legs or thighs. This clot can move to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism (PE). PE is managed with blood thinners, although severe PE may require surgical procedures to remove the clot.
  • Chronic venous insufficiency: Chronic venous insufficiency develops when the valves are unable to hold the flow of blood against gravity. This condition can cause pain, cramping, swelling, skin changes and ulcers.
  • Varicose veins: Faulty valves can cause varicose veins, which are enlarged veins that can lead to leg pain, swelling or ulcers. Varicose veins often bulge near the skin’s surface around the ankles or knees.

Symptoms of Vein Disease

Venous diseases look different for every patient. Some symptoms may not seem severe but can be warning signs for a more significant issue. To avoid the consequences of untreated venous diseases, look for these symptoms:

Vein Disease Treatment Options

At Texas Vein & Wellness Institute, we help you overcome your vein complications with simple, minimally invasive treatment. Our experts are specialists in the field with years of experience to inform their diagnoses and decisions.

Our providers offer the following venous disease treatments:

  • VenaSeal: VenaSeal is a minimally invasive procedure that uses medical glue to seal a refluxing vein. Once the vein is closed, the blood naturally redirects to healthy passageways.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: Our team offers radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for patients with varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. This procedure injects a small catheter and uses heat to collapse the vein safely. The trapped blood eventually moves to a healthy vein, and the diseased vein disappears.
  • Microphlebectomy: Microphlebectomy procedures can be used alongside other treatments to improve aesthetic results. Your provider will use a small tool to create incisions and remove the diseased vein.
  • Sclerotherapy: Patients may prefer sclerotherapy treatment for small, cosmetic vein issues. This procedure uses a small needle to inject a sealing agent, which causes spider veins to fade over time.
  • Endovenous Laser Ablation Surgery (ELAS): Endovenous Laser Ablation Surgery is a minimally invasive vein treatment that allows us to close problem veins and reroute the blood to healthy veins.
