How to Prevent Spider Veins

Posted on August 12th, 2022 by Texas Vein & Wellness Institute

Telangiectasia, more commonly known as spider veins, is a condition that causes small superficial blood vessels to appear close to the surface of the skin. It leads to thin lines or patterns that can be either purple, blue or red. Sometimes, the veins will appear either flat or slightly raised. Either way, spider veins often occur on the backside of the calves and thighs.

While telangiectasia is a noticeable condition, it is more of a cosmetic concern than an indicator of something serious.

Spider Vein Prevention

There are several steps you can take to prevent spider veins. Here are a few ways:

  • Wear compression stockings: Compression stockings apply an even pressure, which helps to improve the blood flow in your legs. These socks provide relief and prevent more spider veins from forming.
  • Elevate your legs: Prevent blood from pooling into your lower legs by keeping your legs elevated above your heart. You can keep your legs raised at night by sleeping with your legs over a pillow.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight: Your legs support your body’s weight, and the more pressure they’re under, the higher your chances of developing spider veins. By maintaining a healthy weight, you minimize the chances that you’ll develop spider veins.
  • Stay active: Making sure you stay active throughout the day, especially if you spend extended periods sitting during school or work, is an important way to avoid getting spider veins. Take breaks to stand, stretch or even take a walk.

Spider Vein Treatment Options

If you are currently dealing with spider veins, most medical professionals will start by recommending conservative treatments. Making lifestyle changes, moving around more throughout the day or wearing compression stockings can help.

Your medical provider can also help you resolve spider veins with options like:

  • Sclerotherapy: This involves using a sclerosing agent to close the vein. As a result, less blood flows into the area, helping to reduce swelling and visible veins.
  • Laser: Laser therapy is a nonsurgical procedure. It relies on a highly specialized laser to treat smaller spider veins.
