Leg Pain and Swelling

What Causes Leg Pain and Swelling?

Over time, our veins can start to deteriorate after working hard to keep us moving. You might be starting to feel some aches and pains in your legs, and a common cause of leg pain and swelling is vein disease. Here are some of the most common forms of vein disease you may be experiencing:

  • Varicose veins: Varicose veins are a venous insufficiency where blood pools in the legs instead of pumping back to the heart. You may have varicose veins if you notice dark blue or purple bulging veins in your legs. Swelling can also cause them to look twisted or rope-like.
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Deep vein thrombosis can happen when a thrombus — or blood clot — forms in the deep veins in your legs. While this condition is not immediately obvious, DVT can become worse over time.
  • Spider veins: Spider veins are a common symptom of aging and have a blue, purple or red hue. They are not always signs of deep issues, but if you experience pain or swelling, you may want to get them checked out.
  • May-Thurner Syndrome: May-Thurner Syndrome occurs when the overlying right iliac artery compresses the left iliac vein in your leg. The pain and swelling can range from mild to severe. You may also experience some leg heaviness.

Treating Leg Pain and Swelling at Texas Vein & Wellness Institute

At Texas Vein & Wellness Institute, we have the solutions to manage the pain and swelling in your legs. Some of the most advanced technologies and treatments we offer include:

  • Endovenous laser ablation surgery (ELAS): ELAS is a minimally invasive treatment to reverse the effects of varicose veins. This treatment uses ultrasound guidance to close the problem vein and reroute the blood supply to healthier, functioning veins.
  • Phlebectomy: A phlebectomy removes the diseased veins entirely from your legs, improving symptoms and leg appearance. This procedure is also minimally invasive, with little to no recovery time.
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): RFA technology uses radiofrequency energy. A thin catheter is inserted in the problem vein during this treatment, permanently sealing it.
  • Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy: Like ELAS, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy uses ultrasound technology to find the vein properly. From there, an expert will inject a sclerosant solution into the vein, eventually absorbing it naturally into your body.
  • Varithena: Varithena treats varicose veins with a microfoam injection to stop blood flow to the problem vein. This procedure is gentle and non-invasive with minimal downtime.
  • VenaSeal: VenaSeal is the latest development in venous treatments, closing abnormal veins with a glue-like substance. Only one small incision is needed.
