Slow Growth of Leg Hair and Toenails

As we age, it is natural for leg hair and toenails to grow at a much slower rate. However, if you are younger and have noticed your hair and nail growth is slower or they have stopped growing altogether, this could be a sign of underlying artery disease.

At Texas Vein & Wellness Institute, we have the expertise and resources available to diagnose the reason and give you proper treatment for the underlying issue.

What Causes Slow Hair and Nail Growth?

In most cases, slow leg hair and toenail growth are attributed to peripheral artery disease (PAD). This arterial disease is possible when plaque accumulation can restrict blood circulation, and will affect proper hair and nail growth as a result. Blood, oxygen and nutrients have trouble reaching the lower extremities, which can also cause leg pain, numbness and slow-healing wounds.

There are a few risk factors that can increase your chances of developing PAD and eventually influence slower hair and nail growth. The most common include:

  • Genetics: If your family has a history of high cholesterol, high blood pressure or stroke, you could be at a higher risk of developing PAD.
  • Gender: Historically, PAD affects more women than men. Women also tend to be underdiagnosed and undertreated because they often do not show many of the prevalent symptoms until later in the disease’s development.
  • BMI: Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 are more likely to develop PAD due to existing heart conditions and plaque accumulation in the arteries.
  • Diabetes: Diabetes affects the cellular lining in your blood vessels, which makes them more rigid and can prevent proper blood circulation, increasing the risk of PAD.

How We Treat Artery Disease

The experts at the Texas Vein & Wellness Institute are here to help you manage PAD as well as the symptom of slow hair and nail growth. Like every condition, PAD starts with a diagnosis. We can perform an X-ray examination of your blood vessels using computed tomography angiography (CTA), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) or catheter-based angiography.

Here are some of the treatments we offer:

  • Angioplasty: This minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure is done to widen narrowed or blocked arteries to encourage healthier blood circulation. Many choose to have an angioplasty over open heart surgery because of the shorter recovery time and less risk.
  • Atherectomy: An atherectomy specifically targets plaque in the arteries, removing it using a laser-tipped catheter. This procedure also allows for fast recovery and greatly improves blood circulation.
