When you think of spider veins, you probably just think about them showing up on your thighs or legs. However, these deep blue, twisty veins can appear on your face as well! It’s possible you’ve seen them referred to as spider angiomas or telangiectasias, and both of those terms refer to the same thing. Luckily, these veins usually don’t cause any pain but if they are painful, that can be cause for concern. In addition to the face, you may also see bulging veins appear on the forehead or on the side of your face near your temples.
Similar to varicose veins, spider veins are caused by many of the same factors like heredity, aging, pregnancy, sun damage, and spending a lot of time standing. In addition to those factors though, excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to spider veins on the face.
Your veins are the pathways that move deoxygenated blood back to your heart. As we get older, those tissues that support the veins and push the blood start to weaken. This makes the blood pool which makes the veins curvy. The veins can also then backflow and leak, leading to varicose and spider veins.
If spider veins seem to happen as we get older as there any ways to prevent them? Yes, it’s true that aging causes spider veins but when it comes to your face, there are ways you can hopefully eliminate seeing these issues. Here are some basic guidelines for prevention:
If you do have spider veins on your face already, there are options for treatment! You may be able to cover them simply using a good-quality concealer. A green-based color corrector can also work to counteract the redness of the veins.
If you already know that covering them won’t be enough, you can opt for lasers or IPL treatment or sclerotherapy. We offer both treatment options and would happy to discuss which would be best for your concerns!
