What to Know About Varicose Veins and Your Pregnancy

When it comes to your body during pregnancy, it can seem like you have experienced just about every change in the book. One major change that you might experience are varicose veins. Varicose veins during pregnancy are caused by an excess of hormones, and although they can sometimes go away after pregnancy, that’s not always the case. So, what can you do for them while you’re pregnant? Let’s take a closer look and see.

What In-Office Treatments Can Be Done?

Here at Texas Vein & Wellness Institute, we don’t like to do any vein treatments on patients while they’re pregnant. If you want to create a post-pregnancy treatment plan, we can schedule a consultation to get you started. Post-pregnancy varicose vein treatments can include:

What Can Be Done While I’m Pregnant?

In addition to post-pregnancy treatments, there are many non-invasive preventative options you can try with the approval of you OB-GYN. Some of the preventative options include:

• Regular Exercise: Moving during pregnancy can feel impossible to do— and exercise can seem impossible. Making small changes like going on daily walks or taking a cycling class can help increase your blood circulation and ease some of your symptoms.

• Elevate Your Legs Regularly: If you do a lot of standing, you may be doing your varicose veins a disservice. Try to elevate your legs every few hours to prevent your blood from pooling.

• Try Pregnancy Hosiery: Some pregnancy hosiery contain a little bit of compression that can help with varicose veins. Consult with your OB-GYN before you buy compression stockings or pantyhose to make sure that they are okay for you.

Varicose veins and pregnancy are two things that no woman wants to experience together, but they can sometimes be inevitable.
